ADS-B

**Want to Fly High?**

The time is running out to fit your aircraft with an ADS-B system.

**From 12 December 2013, all aircraft operating in Australian
airspace at or above FL 290 must carry approved, serviceable Automatic
Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) avionics equipment.**

CASA published the equipment mandate for ADS-B in early 2009. That
was followed in September 2012 with equipment mandates applicable to
aircraft undertaking IFR flight for satellite based navigation using
the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and supporting
Performance Based Navigation (PBN).

These changes will support global harmonisation of the navigation and
surveillance standards established by the International Civil Aviation
Organization.

**As part of this, from 12 December 2013 all aircraft operating in
Australian airspace at or above FL 290 must use approved ADS-B
avionics.**

Without approved ADS-B avionics, aircraft will not be cleared by ATC
for flight at or above FL 290. Non-compliant aircraft must fly below
FL 290 and may therefore miss out on the fuel efficiencies created by
cruising at optimum flight levels. (Class A airspace extends upwards
from FL 245 so there are several flight levels available below FL 290
for non-compliant aircraft.)

So act now to install ADS-B avionics: meet the 12 December 2013
deadline to ensure your operations are not affected and you receive
the benefits of ADS-B based traffic management.
